Trying to lose pounds, some lose a lot more

Ten years ago, Sonia, 24, joined a now-defunct Scarborough-based weight-loss
program that put her on an 800-calorie-a-day diet with meal replacement
products and supplements. The Mississauga woman, who doesn’t want
her last name published because she is ashamed to weigh almost 300 pounds,
lost 40 pounds in two months. She also had heart palpitations, fainted
on a regular basis and lost clumps of her waist-length red hair.
“It became stringy, the colour went from shiny red and healthy
to mousy brown,” she recalls. “I would run my hands through
it and handfuls would fall out.”
Through her late teens and early 20s, Sonia tried different products
with no success. Caffeine-based diet pills helped her lose 15 pounds
in two months. They also made her grind her teeth and faint. Her heart
raced. TrimLife and Slim-Down Jump-Start, two other over-the-counter
products, didn’t hurt her but nor did they help.
“The latest thing I have (to try) is hoodia, but I haven’t
taken it yet, because it scares me,” she says. Hoodia
gordonii,
a cactuslike plant from southern Africa, is the latest supplement to
make headlines for its supposed ability to help suppress the appetites
of Bushmen during long treks across the Kalahari Desert. After years
of manoeuvring through the vast weight-loss industry, Sonia doesn’t
believe the government can protect consumers from unsafe diet drugs.
“Just because a pill is sold in Canada, it doesn’t make
it okay, it doesn’t make it safe, let alone good for you,” she
says.
But the young woman doesn’t always follow her own advice and
she knows she will turn to another weight-loss program or product soon.
“Sick is better than fat, sometimes,” she says, her voice
breaking with emotion. “I have great platitudes and I want to
believe them, but deep down I’m so desperate, like so desperate,
to lose this weight.”
